Your child will also be factor V Leiden. If you do not have it, the baby will only get the one 'bad' gene from his father and be 'heterozygous'.

Hi, Catherine,

Contrary to TJ's statement, your baby will only definitely have Factor V Leiden mutation if your partner is homozygous (has two bad genes). This is rare. If he has only one bad gene (heterozygous) your baby has a one in two chance of getting it. My husband has it (heterozygous), and three of our oldest five children have inherited it. It is not a really awful thing to have, compared to other things you will have been tested for. Many of my in-laws have it, and have had no ill-effects despite living to old age. My husband is the only one to have had a blood clot. Management can involve blood tests to adjust clotting with Warfarin (the main ingredient in Ratsak!) by my husband and children just keep active. The biggest risk seems to be for pregnant women (those who have it themselves, not those whose babies have it), when the risk of blood clots is higher anyway.

Hope this helps.
