Coumadin vs. aspirin therapy

Posted in General Question about 1 year ago, 3 replies

I recently had my leg amputated due to blod clots. I had the same leg operated 4 times before over last 10 years also for clots. I had asked my PCP for a referral for an angiogram but he told me to wait until my toe turned blue & to go to the ER. After having my leg amputated I now have a new hematologist who says I have been on the wrong medication all along. She is recommending that I go on aspirin therapy for prevention on future clots. I am rather anxious about this and cannot find anything in the literature supportiung her recommendation. What is the current belief on coumadin therapy versus aspirin therapy? I am realy lost & confused, I have only ine leg left & would like to keep it. WJD

I can tell you a little bit about aspirin thearpy. I cant say it works 100% but it has worked for me. The reason I chose not to do coumadin thearpy is because I am a police officer. I was afraid that since my job is physically a high risk I didnt want to die because I was bleeding internally. I take 2 aspirins a day which come out to 650mg. I make sure I elevate my legs when I go to sleep. It may not be every night but I do it at least a couple nights a week. Just to make sure my blood is at a right level I will go to my oncologist every 3 to 4 months to make sure my blood is a good consistency. If it is then I continue to take the aspirin every day. I know it may not give you all the information you wanted but hopefully it helped a little. I was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden when I was 19 and had knee surgery.

Aspirin therapy is of absolutely no benefit to someone with Factor V Leiden. Aspirin is effective in preventing arterial clots, but not venous clots. Your hematologist is an idiot and you are at risk of clotting again without warfarin therapy.
