Factor V and paralysis

Posted in General Question about 1 year ago, 1 reply

My granddaughter has just been found to have Factor V. They thought she has had a spinal stroke, but now seem to think it is transverse. I have had 4 DVT's and many superficial . I just got over phlebitis and no one has ever told me in all these years about factor V. I hope that has not caused her paralysis, but could it. Everything I have been reading about Factor V is what has happened to me since I was 26 years old. Should me and My daughter be tested? I never knew tthis disorder existed until today. I am 62 years old.

Hi I Know your post was 10 months ago but I'm new to the site. I hope your grandaughter is better. I was 17 years old and had several strokes and a carotid artery dissection. The doctors didn't know what was wrong with me or if I would even survive. It took finding the right doctor who did the simple blood test. I got one bad gene from my dad so my other family memebers were tested because it is better to know. I'm now 29 and was able to have a child even though it was a complicated pregnancy. One can live a normal life with Factor V Leiden but it's important to know if you have it or not.

One other thing that caused complication was that I had a Patent Formen Ovale or a passage way between the 2 chambers of my heart so the blood clots would bypass my lungs and go to my brain. It's also a pretty common occurence and with FVL can be fatal. To detect a PFO is yet another simple test which they usually don't test for.
