What are the choices of contraception for persons who have Factor V Liden Mutation?

Posted in General Question 6 months ago, 5 replies

My daughter has Factor V Liden Mutation and has been on Depo Provera Injection for 1 year. Depo Provera has made her gain weight and she is having difficulty losing even 1 pound. Has anyone tried the progestin only pill?

I would look into an IUD, I was diagnosed about 3 yrs ago and had to stop the pill, and long term depo use can cause mild to moderate bone loss(and unwanted weight gain), they didn't want to give me the IUD at first since I was only 25 and had no children but it was my best option. I will tell you that since i have never had children it was extra painful.

From my experience (I'm hetero factor v, homo MTHFR C677T, my sister is hetero Factor V) because I have had previous clots an IUD or condom is it. My sister on the other hand who has never had a clot was allowed on the progesterone only pill and says it's not bad. I won't get an IUD as the risks for a woman who has not yet had children are higher that it will insert wrong or cause problems later on (as your uterus is not used to having something in it), plus it's good for 5-10 years (depending on the brand) and I plan to have children within the next year so it's not worth the out of pocket expense (I was quoted $750 cash with my BCBS PPO in CA!).
