After I was diagnosed with FVL, I spoke with my hematologist about possible birth control options. He did not have any problems with my being on a progesterone-only birth control (re: injectable, like Depo) as there was no indicators that it would increase my clotting risk. But he also noted there there is little research on the subject. That was almost ten years ago, so maybe there is more out there now. Perhaps your husband's hematologist would have a recommendation. Regardless, I would recommend that your daughter get tested to find out if she carries the gene. That way if she does have it, she can take basic precautions to help prevent clotting (like moving around frequently during long trips). Hope this helps.

I've had FVL for 8yrs now. When I was 21 I had a miscarriage noone could figure out why, finally my dr took all kinds of test and we found out I had it. He also told me that I could only take certain birth control(Mini Pill&Depo Shot) because other's wouldn't work. I was on the pill but ended up pregnant anyway. Ask your Dr or Gyn about it.

Your daughter should get tested to see if she has the gene. If she only has it from her father then it isn't quite as serious as if she has it from both parents. I just got out of the hospital recently for a subclavian vein blood clot caused from the FVL (from one parent) and the combination of oral contraceptives. I was told that the estrogen contraceptives or hormal replacements for other causes increase the risk of blood clots and that combined with FVL is not a good combination. It is serious and should be taken seriously because if a clot develops and gets to the heart or lung... not good. I would definitely seek out an OBGYN that understands FVL. Mine didn't and not all do. There are other progesterin only pills, but they are not as effective. But better to use multiple birth control methods and be smart than have a clot. Trust me!
